Dec. 17, 2015–After many years of negotiations, India and Japan have signed a memorandum of understanding on nuclear energy cooperation. The memorandum was signed on Dec. 12 in Delhi by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Negotiations between the two countries for a civil nuclear deal began in 2010, were suspended after the Fukushima Daiichi accident, and resumed in 2013.

In a statement, Abe noted that a final agreement enabling India to import Japanese nuclear technology and services “will be signed after the technical details are finalized, including those related to the necessary internal procedures.”
